THE TWISTED BENJAMINA

When I started exploring bonsai and penjing, I stumbled across the YouTube channel ‘The Bonsai Zone’ hosted by Nigel Saunders. Inspired by what I saw, I purchased a small grouping of Ficus benjamina cuttings and selected my favorite as my first experiment into this art form. 

Several years later, I crafted a sphere planter, a twist on my KEPLER design, specifically for this cutting, now a pre-bonsai tree. I decided to name it, not after comets like I normally would, but after the man who inspired this exciting journey.

Crafted using specially blended concrete and locally sourced pigments, Nigel is wrapped in a ring of volcanic stones that gives an out-of-this-world vibe to this planetary centerpiece.

Because of the unique nature of the planter, I was able to thread one of the roots through an opening in the side. A representation of life’s drive to find and explore new openings where there had not been.

Nigel stands as a centerpiece. It draws attention with the striking pattern of volcanic stones. This is truly unlike any other plant or planter.
